When you choose to put index in a non default location i.e. D:\SharePointIndex the above error occurs.
I've looked into it and when not using default "-rootdirectory" WSS_WPG group don't get correct permissions on
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Data\Office Server\Applications.
It should have "Full Control"

hey jspadea - after applying the relevant permissions have you recycled the SharePoint Search services?
I have my index set to C:\SP2013SearchIndex (it's a dev box), and ran into the same issue with the "The filtering process has been terminated" error
I granted "Full Control" permission to he WSS_WPG group to the C:\SP2013SearchIndex, C:\Windows\Temp, and C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Data\Office Server\Applications
Then I initiated another crawl, but received same error.
Then I recycled the two services on both my servers. Services being “SharePoint Search Host Controller”, and “SharePoint Server Search 15”.
After this I initiated another crawl, and it completed successfully. My Crawl history reported 5,719 Successes and I am able to search for content.
